Sixth graders at NMHZ present Ancient Egypt projects

Sixth graders at NMHZ present Ancient Egypt projects

Sixth-grade scholars at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School presented their Ancient Egypt projects to students and staff at the school on Friday, March 10, 2023. Egyptian music played in the background as students presented their displays which included pyramids and Ancient Egyptian farms. Michele Battista, sixth-grade teacher at NMHZ, coordinated the projects and presentations.

“The children learn about the different time periods of Ancient Egypt and how the people lived,” said Battista, “They created all of these projects that they wanted to learn more about, whether it was how they were buried, how the tombs were erected, deciphering hieroglyphics. I always felt that kids learn more with hands-on activities. They really learn so much more than when you just give them a test. They really want to understand and enjoy what they are doing. Then presenting it to their friends is even more exciting.”

Because of the diverse student body at NMHZ, some students were able to present their projects in other languages to students who understood their native languages. Several students presented in Portuguese and Spanish.

“I learned that the Egyptians have their own beliefs, and everyone has their own beliefs,” said Alexia Ortega, sixth grader at NMHZ. “Everyone has their own beliefs, and we should just all live in harmony learning to live with other beliefs and not judge them but live with them and learn about them.”

Students presenting on Ancient Egypt

Students prepared the projects as a culmination of their unit on Ancient Egypt. They have also learned about other cultures throughout the year. The sixth graders started by presenting to third graders. They presented to other grade levels as the day went on.

“This made me learn about how they care about each other in Egypt,” said Javier Brown, sixth grade student at NMHZ. “If they didn’t care, they wouldn’t have built the pyramids to protect their dead, and they wouldn’t put all that gold in there. Presenting to other students feels good because I’m inspiring them to do what I’m doing and learn about stuff like I am.”
