Students in front of the game they are creating

Students in Vito Dimatteo's sixth grade class at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School were recently tasked with the objective of creating different types of math games based on core arithmetic skills they learned this year. Students went from creating math chutes and ladders, to creating ping pong tables, turf and mini football fields. Games ranged from small group teams of one to one or groups of four, to playing math bingo and jeopardy as a whole class.

Pre-K students at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School orbited around the room, simulating the movement of the planets, during their STEM lesson on Friday, May 3, 2024. Larry Spitzer, an educator from The STEM Alliance, visited the school dressed as an astronaut to teach pre-K students about the solar system.

Students, families and staff worked through math problems and games at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School's Family Math Night on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Students smiled and laughed as they enjoyed the games, but they also learned about math concepts as they played.

Staff and student at tipoff

Middle school students at Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School faced off against teachers and staff in the first staff-student basketball game at the school on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Younger students sat on the sidelines cheering, and despite the staff's victory, everyone left happy with smiles on their faces.

As part of the sixth-grade social studies curriculum Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School students have been studying ancient Egypt. As a culminating project to represent their understanding of what they learned, students constructed various projects from pyramids to mummification, from scenes of the Nile River to learning about the different pharaohs. They presented their projects on Friday, March 22, 2024.
