Rai Benjamin wins 400m heat to advance to semis in Paris Olympics

Competing in Paris for his second Olympic Games, Rai Benjamin ran the 400m hurdles in 48.82 seconds and won his heat, securing an automatic qualification to the semifinals on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at 1:35 p.m. Watch live on NBC and Peacock TV. 

Rai Benjamin is a 2015 Mount Vernon High School alum, and he received silver in the 400m hurdles in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He ran the fastest 400m hurdles time in American history during those Olympics at 46.17 seconds. Benjamin also holds three of the top five times in the world for the event.

Parents attend Coffee & Tea event held by Grimes School Principal and Parent Teacher Association

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, parents attended Coffee & Tea, a meet-and-greet event, held by Grimes School. Coffee, bagels and other breakfast delights were served as parents filed into the school’s auditorium, getting a chance to mingle and settle in before the event started. The goal of this meet-and-greet was to have an honest discussion and set boundaries with technology, as Grimes is moving towards becoming a phone-free school.

Scholars from various elementary schools across the Mount Vernon City School District strolled into their respective schools on Thursday, September 19, 2024, holding the hands of their father, grandfather, or father figure. There were plenty of smiles, as everyone was excited for the district’s annual Dad Take Your Child to School Day.  Click here to view the photo gallery from the day!  

Special Education supervisors being introduced.

Parents filed into the auditorium at Rebecca Turner Academy to meet Special Education Department staff, Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) staff, and hear more about how the Mount Vernon City School District can support their children’s success. Parents also learned about different resources they can use at the meet-and-greet, which was held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

The Mount Vernon City School District recognized its top educators by honoring them at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Administrators handed out 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year certificates and recognized educators from each of the District’s 16 schools.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. today – Wednesday, September 11, 2024 – a car struck the side of Mount Vernon Honor Academy, causing damage to a wall. The car hit in the area of the building where drop-off and dismissal are conducted, but no students were in the immediate area when the accident occurred. There were no injuries to staff members or students.
