ATLAS/Gifted and Talented

The Mount Vernon Academies of Talent, Leadership, and Scholars (ATLAS) program will provide a variety of research-based services that will give identified students the opportunity to address their unique needs.  This will include curriculum that stresses higher-order thinking such as inquiry skills, problem solving, and creative thinking.  In addition, development of self-direction, risk-taking, curiosity, imagination and interpersonal relations will be emphasized. The program framework will allow for individual projects and peer-group interaction.

Long-range goals for this program include the development of self-actualization for the highly able young person and the development of a sense of responsibility to self, school, and society.

Admissions and Open House Information

Admissions will take place for all students enrolled in second grade and those who are newly enrolled to the District.

The first tier of admissions is determined through the administration of the Ravens Matrices Assessment. This is not a test of academic proficiency, where studying is necessary. Your child will take this assessment at a scheduled time between May 1 - June 1, 2026. This will be the only opportunity for testing. The results of the assessment and program placement will be communicated through email and paper correspondence by June 15, 2026.

If you would like to opt out of Gifted and Talented Testing, please submit a written note to your child’s homeroom/class teacher by April 1, 2026. As a reminder, this will be the only opportunity for testing. There will be no retesting.

"The term 'gifted and talented,' when used with respect to students, children, or youth, means students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in such areas as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities."
